Tempo is the speed of execution of an exercise and corresponds to the different muscle contractions throughout a movement: eccentric, concentric, isometric.

Additionally, the tempo used for a given exercise has a significant impact on what type of quality is trained and/or the OPT model phase being utilized in an exercise program. Therefore, you want to make sure that you’re lining up exercise tempo with the training phase goal.
